8-Bit Synth is exactly like that on all points. By вЂњFrench approachвЂќ I mean, normal but not quite, always offering something a little unusual, conventional but still designed вЂњtheir wayвЂќ. IвЂ™ve been reviewing UVI virtual instruments since the first quarter of 2008, and IвЂ™ve learned to expect reliable quality in great-sounding instruments with a touch of a unique French approach. In the left row are several buttons opening new editing windows for those enthusiastic programmers who are not happy with the preset. For amplitude you can also specify that velocity is to be applied to the note loudness and/or attack time (quite nice addition to my way of thinking).ДЄt the bottom left is a balance control allowing you to set the balance between low and high keyboard range for emphasizing bass parts, making them more prominent, or alternately emphasizing the upper range. There is an ADSR envelope for amplitude and for filter along with sliders for setting the low-pass, high-pass or band-pass filter controlling cutoff frequency, resonance, depth and velocity. We have a nice set of basic controllers for both the SID and the CHIP layer as well as global controllers affecting both together. Of course, you may find no need for doing that since 8-Bit Synth comes with almost 400 patches, more than enough to amply color your production. Those familiar with other UVI sample-based synth instruments will immediately recognize this scheme as the standard UVI approach.ДЄfter choosing a sample for each layer and setting the pan and volume, you can go still deeper in refining your sound. Every final sound could be a combination of both layers or you can turn one layer off using just a SID or CHIPS layer. 8-Bit Synth structure is composed of two separate, independent layers: one offers SIDStation samples and the other one CHIPS samples from Gameboy and Commodore 64. UVI sampled original sounds from game consoles and used those samples as a base. So, letвЂ™s dive into the content to see whatвЂ™s gotten me so jazzed about 8-Bit Synth. So getting something old that sounds fresh is totally a winning situation. But they are clearly freshly-baked because IвЂ™d never heard them before.

I discovered many sounds that have this classic-SID character. So, at the end of the day those obvious sounds we all know from the SID era are by no means the most prominent in this collection. UVI somehow always finds a way to put numerous interesting sounds in every product and this one is no exception. But with silky distorted basses and pleasant leads having a touch of almost annoying cutting-through character, I suddenly realized that those sounds can be my salt and pepper seasonings when I need something usual that sounds unusual.Д«rowsing through the patches, I started to appreciate that 8-Bit Synth might become one of those toys that sticks through the years, being cheek-to-cheek with everlasting Synth 1 or Hofa EQ, the things that still find their way into my productions no matter how many new things come and go. Until now, I found no place for such sounds in my productions. But there is also a multitude of sounds that go beyond the classical game repertoire. 8-Bit Synth also brings a big palette of unusual sounds, some of them well-known, as in the style of Super Mario and other games. They donвЂ™t sound as deep and as pleasant. Those synths, whether free or not, or even those sample based instruments, sound good, but not as good as this one. So, that was about reality, letвЂ™s go back to virtuality.
